On Saturday a group of us went to Columbus to see the US beat Mexico 2-0 and qualify for the World Cup next summer. It was quite a lot of fun and, surprisingly, the crowd composition was roughly 50/50 in terms of US/Mexico supporters. Usually it's a second home game for Mexico, but the small stadium probably had something to do with it. Anyway, great to be there in person to see our biggest rival get soundly beaten. Photos here.
Interesting side note, on the way home we passed the Wheeling suspension bridge. Originally built in 1849, it was the longest bridge in the world. It collapsed Tacoma-Narrows-style in 1854 and was rebuilt in 1860, but the masonry is all original. I just finished this book so I'm currently sensitive to these things.
